THE West Coast is set to see more of Targa Tasmania this year than in previous years with a significant change to the course.
For the past four years the fleet of Targa Tasmania cars has over-nighted in Strahan, hosting a festival for the region.
This year the cars will spend two nights on the West Coast and will utilise three days worth of competition around the region.
Organisers have added an extra 51km of competitive stages on the West Coast alone and have included new stages such as Lake Plimsoll and the rebirth of another on the Pieman Road.
Octagon's sporting director Stuart Benson said the West Coast community's kind nature and stunning driving roads was the force behind the extended stay.
"The West Coast has been really kind to us and and the community has embraced Targa over the years, couple that with some of the best driving roads in the state and that was the driving force behind deciding to stay an extra night.
"The changes allow us to centralise the event and use all the original stages through Hellyer Gorge, over Mt Black and Rosebery.
"Many of the professional drivers have asked if there could be a stage included over Lake Plimsoll and this year we have done it.''
Mr Benson said plans were in place to hold another street party during one of the nights on the West Coast to create a festival atmosphere for the community.
Also this year many of the competitors running in the vintage class will be given the day off during Targa's longer days down the West Coast, which was because the event has been extended by 120km.
"We are trying to spread the economic benefits around the state as well as visiting all the towns on the West Coast while we are there.
"Giving the vintage cars the day off is a good chance for them to get out and experience many of the activities on offer and things they can only experience on the West Coast.''
