Youth leave their mark on new skate park

07 Feb, 2012 10:31 AM
THE creativity of Circular Head's youth has been given a helping hand to bring colour to the Smithton Skate Park.

Accomplished Melbourne graffiti artist AJ Dash last month worked with a group of 20 young people to help decorate the new skate ramp and bowl.

The project, funded by the Circular Head Council and the Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation, gave participants the ability to build on their artistic flair.

A workshop was held at the Seven Up Youth Centre in Smithton. Dash worked with the individuals on multiple designs they had sketched on paper. The next day the participants were asked to pick out their best design that they would paint on the wall at the skate park.

Circular Head youth and community officer Alysha House said Dash brought a lot of experience and talent to Circular Head and was happy to share this with those involved.

"Once the young people painted their designs on the wall AJ came along and tied it all in, '' Mrs House said.

"With the unveiling of stage two it was perfect timing to get the young people in during their holidays to design and make the space their own.

"AJ has been painting since 1988 and has travelled all through South Korea, Europe, New York and London so it was great to see him working with our youth.

"It was a great experience. AJ is a great painter and has a special knack of working with young people.''

Mrs House said the finished art work now not only brightens up the area but helped to build the participants' self esteem and at the same time hopes to help reduce vandalism.
